Arguably, the business of any business is business. This notion summarizes all the activities of the business whether it may engage in philanthropic deeds or the kind of consumer policies it has. This essay explores the consumer policies as is in India with attempts to find out whether these policies are customer oriented or are dictated by the consumer. It is desired to ascertain whether the consumer has all the right to freedom and choice or is a victim of totalitarian policies as in the monopolistic markets. If the consumer is the king he is expected to have all the rights to choose and also dictate the market trends. On the other hand the consumer is the slave if all the decisions are dictated for him in such a manner that he is left no choice than give in to these forces.The Indian population is divided into two categories with one compri sing of the rich citizens who have a high purchasing power and a control of most resources. This population has numerous resources at its disposal as compared to the second. The second population consists of the poor people and the middle class. This population forms the highest percentage of the Indian population. Ironically this population controls less than 20% of the economy (Srinivas, 2008).Most Indian consumer policies lead to exploitation of the poor by the rich who are in most cases the business owners. The government on the other hand has poor policies that neither favor for the start nor the survival of the small business enterprises. Consequently, monopolistic trends ensue from these policies, the developed market players continuously leave the consumer with no option but work with the available option thus making him/ her not the king but the slave.
